Color: Blue from Indigo leaves and Red from Morinda roots
Technique: Warp Ikat
From: Kambera, East Sumba
Symbols and meaning:
From the upper part, there is a list of crocodile which embodies royals. People of East Sumba believes that crocodile is their ancestors. After the crocodile there is Andung. Normally, Andung is a tree with skeletons but in Ruth changed the skeletons into birds which symbolize peace. A very contradictive to the original meaning.
In the center, there is patola ratu, which is an adopted pattern from Indian textiles back then. In the past, a pattern that was adopted from outside Sumba is considered as exclusive and can only be used for royals.
The two lions with a royal litter in the middle is actually a symbol that was adopted from Dutch's coin during the colonialism era. Below it, there is Mahang or Lion which symbolize victory and power. At the bottom, there is Kaka Tua or Cockatoo birds which has the meaning of deliberating for an agreement. Last but not least, there is new symbol made by Ruth which called Sisingo, like a bud shape. It was adopted from a wall decoration in the tv series that she likes to watch on the local television.
